There is a lot of information required to file bankruptcy. This is the reason why we ask you to fill out the packet you received at the first appointment. Every question included in the packet is important and many require a simple “no” answer. Do not get frustrated if you don’t understand a question, just give us a call.
It is also important to complete the checklist of items to bring in. If you do not have a car title, you should request a new one. If you do not have all six months of bank statements, ask your bank for a printout. If you have have any problems, please call us.
You do not need an appointment to return your bankruptcy packet. If you are a couple, both of you do not have to come at this time. Our office hours are 8-12 and 1-5. Please allow 30 minutes for us to go over the papers with you.
After we go over the papers, we will give you an appointment time to come back. At this next appointment you will sign the actual bankruptcy petition which will be filed with the court. If you are a couple, both of you must be there to sign and review the petition which will take about 20-30 minutes. Because we know you want your bankruptcy filed as soon as possible, we try to set your appointment only a few days after you return the packet .
After signing the bankruptcy petition we file it with the court. You should receive a letter from the court within 2 weeks of filing telling you when your court date is. If you do not, call us and we will tell you when your date is.
